Our Past & Our Present

Our Past and Our Present

In an area settled since the 1600s, Greenbush Church was the first Dutch congregation in Rockland to offer services in English, beginning in 1812, the year it was founded. Growing from a spiritual initiative by the Blauvelt family, our congregation has survived tragic fires (this is our third stone building, ca. 1883) while exerting an increasing commitment to local and general mission concerns. Today we remain dedicated to local and wider mission. Our food cupboard grows steadily to meet needs around us; our music ministry is vibrant; and we are committed to the Christian nurture of our children, youth and adult members and neighbors.

Today, our Food Cupboard ("Shirley's Cupboard") is open two Saturday mornings (9-10 am) each month to provide several days basic food for families living in Orangetown or srved by the Department of Social Services. Our Interchurch (4 neighborhood churches) Youth Group offers two weekly dinner programs, Sundays at 5 pm (now at Piermont Reformed Church) for 5th through 7th grades, and Thursdays at 5 pm (now at Tappan Reformed Church for 8th through 12 grades. Our music program, with a large, enthusiastic choir supporting our director and keyboard musician David Anderson, is a source of great satisfaction. We remain committed to all members of the church recognizing opportunities to learn and grow in their faith (Christian Education). We are pleased to include any joy or concern (shared with the pastor by phone, internet, offering plate) during prayer each Sunday.

Stay tuned for news of our approaching bicentennial!
